Layne first made waves in 2018’s If Beale Street Could Talk, portraying the Myteeshirtpalace-Girl Benedict College educated Queen proud of My roots shirt Tish in the romantic drama. To prepare for The Old Guard, she underwent fitness and stunt training and roughly four months of working with the Avengers: Endgame fight coordinator Danny Hernandez to nail the complicated dance of the movie’s battles. Hernandez defines the craft as storytelling a scene in motion, and he saw Layne’s self-described lack of ability as a strength. “Funny enough, what I like is she had no bad habits. You’re starting from ground zero, so to me that is exceptional,” he says. First in Los Angeles, and then in London, he taught her blocking, head takes, and kicking, using mirrors to enable her to see both flaws in her moves and what she did correctly. Separately, Theron followed the same strategy. Eventually they came together in an aggressive, beautifully brutal version of a dance recital.Layne’s fitness regimen was tailored to building up cardio endurance. There were even a few sessions with a running coach. “Gina [director Gina Prince-Bythewood] told me, ‘You’ve got to know how to run’,” she says. Basic strength training—squats, deadlifts, bench presses—undergirded the sheer physical labor of the fight scenes. The technique of properly throwing punches was key. In fact, Layne took a shine to boxing. “Half-assed, lazy punches? Gina wasn’t going to have that! Boxing was a huge part of my training and the base of Nile’s fight style,” she says, and she hopes to continue with it in a post-pandemic world.
